Window to War
Marin Headlands, California

— A remaining wall of the Battery Mendell, a coastal gun battery on Fort Barry built in 1902 to protect the San Francisco coast from an imminent attack from Japan. The guns were removed in 1943, but looking through a window of one of the abandoned buildings reminds us all of a very different time in U.S. history.
